One problem that new information marketers get hung up on is how to keep their information products from being downloaded by people who have not payed for them.
I wouldn’t worry about it too much. There are always going to be people who will try to get stuff for nothing, but there will be more people who are honest and have no problem paying for your products. You don’t want to let information theft slow you down. Just realize, and accept that people will get your products without paying whether it is by doing a charge back, using someone else’s password, or through other means. The good news is that it doesn’t cost you anything like a physical product would.
That being said there are several ways to protect your content. The easiest way is through using WordPress. I recommend WordPress for just about everthing because its easy, and fast. And you have to be fast these days because the more content you create the more money you are going to make. In wordpress you can protect a post by clicking on the visibility “edit” link in the post section. Here you have the option to Password Protect your post. It doesn’t get any easier than that.
You can also use WordPress plugins like Membership Lite to protect pages, posts, and entire forums. It isn’t to difficult, and I have put together a video demo showing how to use the Membership Lite plugin along with a forum plugin to create a protected forum. All customers have to do is purchase a membership through paypal to gain access. The plugins are free, and if you follow along in the video you will get an idea of how to set it up. You can play around with it and create different membership levels that can access different content. Another super simple and cheap solution is to use Ejunkie. You can get a basic account for five bucks a month to get you started. As your business, and inventory grows you can upgrade to carry more products, but when your starting out a basic account is perfect.
If you would like to create a sophisticated membership site with all the bells and whistles I would recommend Login Frequency Marketing. Login Frequency marketing isn’t free but it is reasonably priced considering all of the features it has. I liked that you could buy a license to install it on unlimited sites, unlike products like amember. It is also very easy to install and setup. They have training videos that show you how it is all done so you can follow along step by step as you customize your own. This script just recently underwent a major overhaul and had more features added to it. I haven’t even had a chance to check out all of the new features but the ones I did play with a little bit are pretty cool. My favorite new addition is the theme creator. You can now create themes (your header / footer ect.) and then export them for use on your membership sites. It makes designing your site a snap.
