You have worked hard on creating a fantastic website. You are all ready to make sales, and finally put some money in your pocket, but day after day your hit counter remains at zero. Without traffic your website might as well not even exist, except to put your web address on your business card. Visitors are not going to show up just because your site is online. The work has just begun.
Now you have to generate traffic.
Website traffic comes from only four sources:
1) A person types the name of your website into their computer. This is not going to happen unless they happen to know the name of your site because they read about it eitheir offline or online. They will need the exact website address to do this.
2) Someone is on another site, and clicks on a link that takes them to your site. Links like this will be your primary source of traffic. Not only because people can find your site from them, but more importantly becaus the search engines, like google, will rate your site higher. A higher page rank means your website will appear closer to the top of the natural search engine results.
3) The absolutely best source of traffic is when someone types a keyword, or keyword phrase into a search engine, and your website appears in the top 10 results of the natural listings. The natural listings are website pages that the search engine has determined are the most relevant to the keywords that have been entered.
4) The other listings that show when you do a search are keyword targeted paid advertisments.
These ads are known as pay per click, or ppc ads. The website advertiser only pays for these ads when somebody clicks on them. The amount paid per click depends on what the advertiser
has bid on certain keywords. The price can vary from a penny to a few dollars for each click. If you are inexperienced in ppc advertising you could loose your money quickly without anything to show for it. You can set a monthly budget for the amount you can afford to loose. You might decide to just start off with a fifty dollar budget untill you are comfortable enough to spend more. The advantage
of ppc advertising is that you can get keyword, and geographically targeted traffic to your website almost immediatly. Other methods will require time before you see any results.
